Water/Swimming Safety Tips
Last Updated: August 2003
- Children under age 12 should always wear a life preserver.
- Take a CPR or First-Aid course to be better prepared.
- If you don't know how to swim, always wear a life preserver when in
the water. Take swimming lessons.
- Never swim alone.
- Don't dive into unknown waters, especially muddy or murky waters.
There may be underwater obstacles and/or shallow spots.
- In an emergency, remember Reach, Throw, Row, Go:
- Reach for the person with a stick or branch.
- Throw the person a flotation device.
- Row out to the person.
- Go for help.
Swimming Hole Tips:
- Take sunscreen lotion, insect repellent, calamine lotion, and a
first-aid kit to prevent sunburn, flight-by-insects, and to treat
minor injuries.
- Wear old tennis shoes or water shoes when swimming in water holes
to prevent cuts and bruises from rocks, glass, and cans.
